When you live with chronic health conditions, you’re often forced to miss out on the basics of life – socialising with friends, being able to commit to work, taking part in hobbies – because of the limitations of your physical body.
It becomes very frustrating to have to constantly curb your plans, knowing that if you do dare to push past the boundaries of what feels comfortable, you will inevitably pay a heavy price in the aftermath; sometimes causing flare ups of symptoms for days or weeks.
This often results in an endless cycle of push/pull, do/don’t, which means you abandon feeling any hope about positive change;
– knowing that you have to admit that the life that you once knew is perhaps irreparably changed forever.
Society abandons broken things, making us feel smaller and more isolated every time we have to admit we can’t keep up. We often turn this anger onto ourselves, specifically our bodies – abandoning ourselves and the body’s inherent wisdom, when really what we need to do is lean in to this intelligence.
Breaking this cycle of frustration is actually one of the fundamental things to address when healing from long-term health conditions. But I know from personal experience that this isn’t easy!
